oaks veterinary hospital pet of the month

February 2010

Athena, Hamlet, and Venus are the pride and joy of the Wright family, and always a pleasure to care for here at Oaks! Athena, the "Princess", is a lovely black lab mix who rules the group. Hamlet, or "Little Man", is a fun loving Welsh Corgi. The third member of the clan is Venus, aka "Moose Puppy" - an energetic yellow lab.

They all love to play ball, but have their own styles. Athena is adept at catching balls, but will not return them. Hamlet and Venus will fetch and return with great enthusiasm! Venus loves tug-of-war with her rope toy, and when she wags her tail, her whole body follows.

They all love their Blue treats, each other, and their human family.

January 2010

Meet Doxie and Stogie Borganelli, two special Dachshunds who love life. They are very energetic despite being seniors. Doxie enjoys chasing balls - his favorite is a big tennis ball. Stogie prefers to play with his stuffed animal pets. Doxie really enjoys beef flavored treats. Stogie will eat everything, and will actually bark at the refrigerator when he wants a snack. Our Oaks family and the Borganelli family enjoyed their trio of Dachshunds for many years, and were very sad to say good-bye last year to Sport, the eldest of the three. Thankfully, Doxie and Stogie are full of life, and enjoy their daily lives and their visits to Oaks!

December 2009

Meet Phoebe Carr! Phoebe is a lovable 5½ month old Boxer puppy. Her favorite activities include playing with her 3 human siblings, running in the backyard and chewing on her pink squeaky toy. In addition to being outgoing and fun-loving, phoebe is a very smart puppy. She is working very hard on learning to sit, lie down, and stay and will be starting her Advanced Beginner Obedience class in January.

November 2009

Milo, a Domestic Short Hair kitty, likes to play with anything he can chew. His family calls him their "puppy." He loves to roll over on his back and get your attention. He also likes sitting on the back porch and looking outside. He is about 4-5 months old now, and loves jumping on the bed and playing under the covers.

October 2009

Zoe Kohn, a 6 year old Yorkie mix, is a little dog with a B-I-G personality! She is a regular visitor at Oaks, and always a very good patient! Zoe does like to taunt Sandie, the Kohn's outside dog, by lining up her toys near the shared glass door. Zoe has a sensitive stomach, so her special treats for her visits are distributed to neighbors. Her favorite food is chicken and rice, and with her special squeaky toy, Zoe has a very good life!

September 2009

Hi!! I'm Gretta Olinger. I am a tri-color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who just turned 9 a couple of weeks ago. I love to spend my time with my sister Sophie (the other pretty face in the picture), running around the back yard, sleeping and eating. Summer is my favorite time of year because Sophie and I get to spend time with our cousin Bella (also an Oaks client) in the North Carolina mountains! There are a lot of chipmunks, squirrels and rabbits to chase there! I LOVE my family, especially all of the little girls, Reece, Katie Grace and Brittney. I love to snuggle with them while they study or watch TV. I also love seeing my Oaks Vet family! They take very good care of me, keep my teeth clean and my fur shiny. They also sell my mom that yummy Hill's I.D. food! I can't wait to go in for my Pet of the Month Bath!! Go Gators!

August 2009

Zeus is a 10 year old Rottweiler. He is owned by the Albro family and has brought such joy to their lives. He has always been a lover of water and playing fetch; although his activity has slowed dramatically upon becoming a senior. He now enjoys taking the time to relax and enjoy life as it comes; especially from his favorite place on the couch! He loves food and will eat anything that does not eat him first. Upon becoming a monthly visitor to Oaks for his adequan injection, he has become very fond of his T/D treats. He loves visiting his Oaks family.

July 2009

Keila is a beautiful and friendly yellow lab owned by the Doan family. She loves to go for walks and play fetch, and chicken is her favorite treat. Keila is also brave and uncomplaining - she survived two years of chemotherapy and a surgical procedure - and is now cancer free! Silvia Doan describes Keila as the "happiest dog she has ever known."

June 2009

"Apple" Halcus is a 13 month old Peek-a-Poo. She is very excited to be named Pet of the Month at Oaks Veterinary Hospital! This is a picture of "Apple" on Halloween when she dressed up as Snow White. "Apple" enjoys riding in the car, chasing cats, and taunting larger dogs (especially her cousin "Skeeter"). Her favorite treats are cheese cubes and peanut butter. After a long day of playing and causing trouble Apple loves most to just cuddle up with her mom and dad, Chrissy Halcus and Greg Weston.

May 2009

"Jake" is an amazing Boston Terrier. The staff at Oaks Veterinary Hospital love when "Jake" is boarding with them because he is such a sweetie. "Jake" is now four years old but still full of energy, just like a puppy. He loves his owner Miguel Rodriguez and especially loves when they play fetch together in the backyard.

April 2009

"Yin" is an 11 year old Chow. She has a beautiful, fluffy coat. "Yin's" favorite activities include taking long walks with her mom Susan DeGennaro and watching all of the birds in her backyard. When she is not playing outdoors, "Yin" can be found playing with her favorite toy, a stuffed hedgehog.

March 2009

“Link” is a very unique and personable cat. As most of the employees at Oaks found out, “Link” craves more attention than you can imagine. When his owners adopted him, he was an 8-week old ball of fur and infested with fleas. The next day they brought him to Oaks Veterinary Hospital for a check-up and a bath, after which he felt much better and started to display his playfulness. He recently underwent intestinal surgery after swallowing a foot from a toy. He recovered very quickly, and is now back to his old self, running around constantly wreaking havoc. Occasionally he chooses to take a break and curl up for a nap on the couch with his owners. “Link’s” owners had to be very persistent to get this picture of “Link” because they have never been able to photograph him with his eyes open!

February 2009

Maggie's first life was horrible - she was starved and abused. After being rescued by Dr. Kaplan-stein, the owner of Oaks Veterinary Hospital and lover of Irish Setters, her new owner - Josh Alterman - was found by way of his mom, who had previously owned a setter. When Josh first met Maggie she was truly "skin and bones", weighing only 42 pounds, and acted like a wild horse, with 8 inches of slobber slinging from her mouth. In spite of the challenges, Josh adopted her. When Maggie first came to her new home she sprinted right to the coffee table and slid across, wiping everything off of the table, then barked at the TV. After a day of not eating Josh bought 4 pounds of roast beef - that did the trick and she began eating wet, then dry food within days. She insisted on sleeping on top of his head. Within 2 weeks, she was almost a normal dog, and had gained over 10 pounds. A very happy ending for Josh and Maggie, who now also lives with 3 cats!
